Windows Vista Wireless Network Configuration
Step 1: Get a certificate

  1. Make sure your PC is on the Internet either through a wired or wireless connection.
  2. Click this link to get a certificate: Certificate Maker
(NOTE: Use your OCU username and password combination. Your username should be entered as “ocu\<username>“. For example, a student with username “jsmith.stu” would enter “ocu\jsmith.stu”.)
  3. Save the certificate in a location you will remember such as your desktop. For simplicity sake, keep the file name “mycert.pfx”.

Step 2: Install your certificate

  1. Double click the certificate you saved in Step 1 to bring up the “Certificate Import Wizard”.
  2. Click Next on the welcome screen.
  3. Click Next on the “File to Import” screen.
  4. Enter “pass” on the “Password” screen and click Next.
  5. Click Next on the “Certificate Store” screen.
  6. Click Finish to execute the import of the certificate.

Step 3: Configure wireless settings

  1. Ensure all non-Microsoft wireless configuration utilities are disabled and closed. We will be using Microsoft’s wireless configuration tools.
  2. Click the round Windows button in the bottom left (formerly known as the Start button) and open Control Panel. Double click the "Network and Sharing Center" application.
  3. Click Manage Wireless Networks then click Add. Click "Manually create a network profile".
  4. Enter "WLANuserOCU" in the textbox for "Network Name". In the drop down box for "Security type" choose "802.1x". Click the checkbox for "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting". Click Next.
  5. Click "Change Connection Settings". Choose the Security tab. Change "Choose a network authentication method" drop-down box to "Smart Card or other certificate".
  6. Click Settings. Click the check box for "StarNet" under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". Click OK, then OK, then Close.
  7. Congratulations! Your PC is now configured to connect to the wireless network. Click here for more information about using OCU’s wireless network.
